Police bodycam documentaries are gaining prominence in streaming and awards.

Emmy winner Geeta Gandbhir's The Perfect Neighbor topped Netflix's global charts on 19 October 2025, two days post-release, using only bodycam recordings, 911 calls, and security footage to reconstruct the 2 June 2023 killing of Ajike "AJ" Owens in Florida.

The 96-minute film with zero talking heads earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, a Sundance Directing Award, and Oscar buzz.

Producers and prosecutors are taking notice. Bodycams provide courtroom evidence and shape public opinion.

Watch for: State legislatures revisiting Stand Your Ground statutes after door-shooting cases, prosecutor offices issuing guidance on full-tape releases, and streaming platforms buying more bodycam-only projects before the format becomes widespread in awards season.

The documentary chronicles white neighbor Susan Lorincz shooting Owens, a Black mother of four, through Lorincz's own locked door after Owens knocked to confront her about throwing a roller skate at Owens' 10-year-old son. Lorincz claimed self-defense under Florida's Stand Your Ground law.

The locked-door detail matters: you can't claim mortal fear while hiding behind your own deadbolt. The bodycam made that absurdity a courtroom fact, not prosecutorial spin.

Here’s Your Brew

Within 48 hours of its release, a documentary with no interviews and no voiceover reached Netflix's top slot globally.

Bodycams record continuously. Viewers often trust unedited footage.

Legacy true-crime formats use interviews to shape emotional narrative. This approach uses unfiltered footage that plays events in sequence.

Prosecutors benefit because juries shaped by bodycam documentaries expect full recordings. Defense arguments about context become harder when entire encounters play uncut.

Streaming platforms gain awards, attention, and subscribers by framing social justice as transparency.

The camera captures events without editorial intervention.

Gandbhir's $5 million Sundance acquisition sets market value for evidence-based documentaries.

Stand Your Ground legislation promoted self-defense rights. Bodycam footage in this case showed the victim posed no threat when shot.

Two Sides, One Mug

Image: Netflix

Pro: Unfiltered footage holds power accountable and prevents prosecutors from selecting only sympathetic clips. Transparency protects civil liberties and promotes honesty in courtrooms and public discourse.

Con: Bodycam-only storytelling strips context, omits mental health considerations, and turns tragedy into entertainment content. Families deserve control over how their trauma is presented for public consumption.

Our read: Gandbhir chose what to include, Netflix chose what to promote, and viewers see a curated 96 minutes of a much larger case file. Selection decisions can still shape the narrative even when using raw footage.

Receipt of the Day

Why it shifts the read: A 100% score with the phrase "surgical precision" signals critics now judge documentary craft by how invisible the filmmaker becomes. The less curation, the higher the praise.
